In this role, you will monitor the forestry operation contractors to ensure scopes of work are implemented according to the task orders and contracts.
This role involves observing operations to verify compliance with Best Management Practices (BMPs) as outlined in the New Mexico Forest Practices Guidelines. Additional compliance standards include criteria set forth by key documents including the Hermits Peak- Calf Canyon Post-Fire Debris Removal Plan (MSMEC) and Forest Health Protection Technical Report RO-22-01 (Hazard Tree Identification and Mitigation, Region 5, USFS). LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
Generally, the crew will operate on a 5-day 40-hour work week. Working days are Monday through Friday with weekends off. However, workday lengths can be modified to accommodate inclement weather. It is up to the discretion of the crew leader to determine schedule modifications to meet deadlines and the needs of partnered organizations while also considering the safety and well being of the crew. Projects will be located in the communities of Madrid, Phillips, Rangeley, and the eastern Flagstaff region north of Kingfield.
COMPENSATION:
Crew members will be paid $16.00 to $18.00 per hour. Each crew member is entitled to housing at a reduced cost after work and on weekends, but is more than welcome to spend off-time elsewhere as long as they can make it to work each day on time. Crew members will receive training involving rigging, chainsaw usage, and basic trail maintenance, guaranteeing their marketability within the trails industry for future employment opportunities. LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:

COMPENSATION:
The assistant trail crew leader will be paid $19 per hour. Each crew member is entitled to housing at a reduced cost after work and on weekends, but is more than welcome to spend off-time elsewhere as long as they can make it to work each day on time. Crew members will receive training involving rigging, chainsaw usage, and basic trail maintenance, guaranteeing their marketability within the trails industry for future employment opportunities. Start/end dates are flexible, but we would like someone that could be here at least May through August. On-site housing will be provided at no cost, and the intern may utilize all that Camp has to offer while here, such as fishing, a skeet range, and a rifle range.
DUTIES:
Duties for the position will include but aren’t limited to assisting with food plot/impoundment farming operations, general management of the lakes, construction/installation of deer stands and duck blinds, equipment operation/maintenance, assisting the state with alligator captures/research, upkeep of main camp area, general property maintenance, and assisting the Camp members as needed. Also, the intern will have the opportunity to meet other professionals in the natural resource field and learn about the many different aspects of managing a large property. Additional intern-driven projects are available but would need to be done after the intern’s primary work is completed

ARC is seeking a Private Lands Biologist to support the recovery of the federally Endangered Black Warrior waterdog and the federally Threatened Flattened Musk Turtle through implementation of the USDA’s Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) Aquatic Connectivity Framework (ACF). This is a full-time, field-oriented position based in north and central Alabama, with a primary focus on supporting habitat restoration and conservation practice implementation on private working lands within the Black Warrior – Tombigbee basin, complementing work occurring on nearby public lands in the Bankhead National Forest.
The PLB will work directly with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other conservation partners to provide technical assistance to landowners, facilitate enrollment in Farm Bill conservation programs such as EQIP, identify priority watersheds, and conduct habitat and species assessments. The position will also support strategic recovery planning, monitoring, and partner coordination for the Black Warrior Waterdog, Flattened Musk Turtle, and associated Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCNs).
- Landowner Engagement & Technical Assistance: Provide technical support to private landowners to assess their property and resource concerns, develop conservation plans, and enroll eligible landowners in NRCS conservation programs to provide cost share support for implementing conservation practices to improve habitat conditions for aquatic species.
- NRCS Program Implementation: Assist landowners in applying for and implementing Farm Bill conservation programs (e.g., EQIP), and coordinate with NRCS field staff to support contract development, practice design and implementation, and follow-up monitoring.
- Outreach & Education: Host or participate in outreach events, workshops, and technical trainings to promote turtle and waterdog-friendly practices and expand program visibility across local communities.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Track project outcomes, coordinate pre- and post-project assessments, and contribute to reporting metrics for funding agencies and partners.
- Field Surveys & Threat Assessment: Conduct occupancy surveys (eDNA, trapping), Stream Quantification Tool assessments, and data analysis to identify threats and prioritize areas for restoration.

For 2026, Legacy will once again offer its Darryl Gates Memorial Summer Internship program, and we are currently seeking highly qualified undergraduate or graduate students for these positions. Our 6–8-week Summer Internship Program will provide students with the opportunity to participate in on-the-job training and environmental education. Students selected for the Legacy Summer Internship program will work with environmental organizations focused on environmental education, environmental monitoring, and the preservation of our precious natural resources.
Interns must exhibit consistent professional characteristics such as a positive attitude, ability to show initiative, emotional maturity, and self-responsibility. Physical activity may be required. Students who are adaptable, responsible, hardworking, willing to learn, and attentive to detail are encouraged to apply.
Legacy Summer Interns will work part-time (at least 20 hours per week) for a minimum of six weeks during the summer of 2026. Applicants must be rising Juniors, Seniors, or graduate students in good academic standing, who are enrolled full-time in a relevant undergraduate degree program at a four-year college or university in the state of Alabama. Specifically, we are looking for students who are enrolled in a variety of environmentally related fields, such as environmental education or engineering; environmental studies; teaching degrees in science, biology, or related field; environmental law; or other environmentally-related career paths. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale as of Fall quarter/semester 2026, and planning to be enrolled full-time through the fall of 2026. Interns must be able to work independently and as part of a team, be comfortable working with all ages, be willing to work outdoors in summer conditions, and must be able to work for a minimum of six weeks (between June – August), with start and end dates established through the host agency. The responsibilities of the intern include, but are not limited to: Daily animal care for reptiles (snakes and turtles). Assisting with education programs by helping teach guests of all ages and helping develop curriculum to be used in public programs and field trips. Interns may be asked to host public programs at the Learning Campus, Interpretive Center, and other areas of interest around the park, to enhance guest experience and raise awareness of the diversity of flora and fauna found in the nine ecosystems within Gulf State Park. Intern will be expected to work in a team setting or alone at times and will be expected to engage with the public as needed or as instructed by the Director of Environmental & Educational Initiatives, Learning Campus Director, or the Learning Campus Environmental Educator. This position will be based at the Learning Campus and Interpretive Center.
Sizemore and Sizemore
The intern chosen for the unique position will have the opportunity to work and learn firsthand what it takes to be a part of a top forest consultant company. This position would be mostly forestry fieldwork and would include the following duties: herbicide application for kudzu, cogongrass, and other invasive species; timber inventory; and timber sale boundary marking. Timber marking, prescribed burning, and other duties depend on the employee’s experience. Interns may also get some experience overseeing timber harvesting operations and exposure to GIS mapping software.
Candidates will need to be willing to be outdoors throughout the summer, even during extreme heat. We can provide any necessary safety equipment, such as snake leggings, safety vests, and other gear.
Bear Creek Collaborative
Are you passionate about the outdoors and education? Bear Creek Collaborative is offering a dynamic 6-week summer internship (20 hours per week) based at the Bear Creek Education Center in Hodges, Alabama. This internship will provide you with hands-on experience in outdoor education, recreation programming, and nonprofit operations.
Primary duties include supporting daily administrative tasks and helping maintain the smooth operation of our office, coordinating with camp contacts to develop customized outdoor education experiences, creating and planning outdoor learning activities for participants ranging from second grade through high school seniors, facilitating activities during summer outdoor education camps (including some overnight camps), assisting with social media marketing and advertising to promote programs and engage the community, and supporting the development and implementation of educational programming that connects participants to outdoor recreation opportunities.

Coosa Riverkeeper is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization located in the Coosa River watershed with an office in Mt. Laurel, AL. We work to protect, restore, and promote the Coosa River and its tributaries in Alabama. Working in over 5,000 square miles of Alabama with 220 miles of the Coosa River, our three programs work to improve water quality and protect public health. WHAT IS SWIM GUIDE:
The Coosa River Swim Guide is a weekly bacteriological monitoring program that answers the simple question, “Is is safe to swim?” Jumping into your favorite swimming hole during the summer should be the easiest decision you make all year. That’s why we dedicate our Thursdays & Fridays from Memorial Day until Labor Day to test water quality at the Coosa’s most popular places to swim! Because, no one should have to gamble with their health when it comes to splashing in the river. Through this program, we protect public health, execute best practices in the field and in the lab, and work to improve water quality—all while having a good time doing so!
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Environmental Technician (ET) has an overall responsibility for the collection of water quality samples in the field while ensuring that the samples collected adhere to our strict QA/QC standards. The ET manages their specific route sample collection as well as the water quality data recorded. The ET will also share responsibilities for lab work such as processing bacteria samples, algae samples, and turbidity samples in our lab, as well as managing & organizing data collected in the field. Additionally, the ET has a responsibility to assist the organization in other areas of work including river clean ups, patrols, projects, tabling events, conducting surveys, and other things of that nature.
This is a paid position. Your mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate to cover your fuel while driving sampling routes during the summer and/or in special circumstances at the discretion of the Executive Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Collect weekly bacteriological samples for a designated route along the Coosa River by vehicle
- Must adhere to strict field and laboratory protocol to ensure samples are not compromised
- Record weekly water quality data using water quality meters including: water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, total dissolved salts (TDS), pH, turbidity
- Process weekly bacteriological water testing for sites along the Coosa River in Alabama
- Process and manage chain of custody forms from field work
- Organize data weekly and analyze water quality parameters for public dissemination
- Assist Water Quality Manager with weekly/monthly lab QA/QC and other water quality related projects
- Support outreach of the Swim Guide program through participation in social media, and attend at least 1 outreach event as a representative of Coosa Riverkeeper
- Support Angler Advocacy by conducting focused surveys for anglers around the watershed
- Attend and support Community Engagement events throughout the summer, such as clean ups, fundraisers, C.R.E.E.K. events, and other opportunities – this may include working some weekends
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- A reliable form of transportation and proof of car insurance to qualify for mileage reimbursement at the federal rate
- Comfortable working outdoors, lifting 50 lbs, being on the water, and ability to swim
- 2-year or 4-year degree completed or in progress. Preferred but not limited to biology, public health, ecology, conservation, etc.
- Proficient written, verbal , and organizational skills
- Good time management skills and willingness to try new things like fishing, swimming, kayaking, etc.
- Must be in close proximity to the Coosa River and its lakes in Alabama and willing to drive your own vehicle long distances on a weekly basis
- All Coosa Riverkeeper employees are expected to follow general employee policies and procedures found in the Intern/Volunteer Policy. In addition to the position responsibilities stated above, these include maintaining a healthy and productive workplace in the office, lab and field, as well as contributing to the overall maintenance and wellbeing of the workplace
TIMELINE FOR POSITION:

- End date: September 4, 2026
- MUST ATTEND Training & Orientation on May 8th, or make special arrangements in advance if unable to attend (This date may change slightly depending on staff availability closer to the day)
- The work schedule is subject to change on a weekly basis with the exception of Swim Guide sampling, lab analysis, and outreach each Thursday and Friday. Weekly stipends are provided when job responsibilities are met for the week. Actual hours may vary depending on assignments.
- Employees may receive class credit as an internship, if applicable. It is the responsibility of the student to do so.
