Job Description:
This position is with the Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF) Forest Data and Analysis Unit.

The mission of the Unit is to collect, manage, visualize, map, analyze, and communicate data to address forest resource availability and sustainability, support Division of Forestry operations, and enhance business intelligence. The Unit responsibilities include
• Managing TDF’s tabular and spatial data
• Implementing effective data management systems
• Evaluating and implementing technology for efficient data collection and
management, mapping, and distribution to field staff
• Providing analytical services, such as forest resource assessments, to support the forest products industry

• Creating dashboards, hubs, and story maps to bring awareness of forests’
importance in the landscape, the forest products industry, and TDF (who we are, what we do, and why it’s important)
• Crafting research projects and analyses to answer pressing questions facing
Tennessee’s forests, such as “How resilient are Tennessee’s forests?” and “How
might wildland fire risk areas shift as Tennessee’s population increases?”
• Administering the Forest Inventory & Analysis Program in partnership with USDA Forest Service
• Administering timber utilization studies Critical work areas of the Data Systems Forester include
• Data Stewardship—includes database administration, best management practices, and geographic information systems (GIS); maintain internal- and external-facing data portals; provide technical support and training for wildland fire information and dispatch system
• Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program—provide technical leadership,
coordinate pilot training; support UAS operations for wildland fire management and forest health assessments; assist the Unit Leader with grant writing
• Data & Technology Project Management—visioneer and execute projects to
enhance TDF programmatic tracking, increase operational efficiency and
transparency, and foster effective business practices and good governance
• Analytical Services—support the Unit Leader in providing creative, visuallyappealing, and high-quality data analyses and visualizations to communicate with landowners, forest industry, other state agencies, external partners, and the public Additional opportunities for the Data Systems Forester include participation in Incident Management Teams and deploying to incidents to support wildland fire operations, logistics, planning, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in forestry or similar natural resources curriculum that may include fire science, natural resource data science, watershed management/hydrology, reforestation, forest management, or related curriculum AND experience equivalent to three years of professional related work.
2. Possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

INTRODUCTION:

If selected, you will perform duties relating to wildlife management and use of techniques aimed at controlling damage caused by feral swine to help protect natural resources, and property.

DUTIES:

Responsible for organizing and conducting direct control operations to reduce wildlife damage within a geographical area or technical/subject area of program involvement.

Inspects and surveys areas and, as necessary, will revise existing WDM programs in close consultation with higher-level management.

Uses WDM tools/devices which may include some or all of the following depending on need in assigned area: firearms; foothold, body-grip, cage traps; foot snares; neck snares; chemical control methods; pyrotechnics; noise cannons/exploders; drop nets; rocket/cannon nets; various other scaring devices.

Assists Wildlife Biologists by correctly identifying current, and forecasting future damage, problems and relating them to the damage-causing species.

Independently determines and selects the most effective means of control for individual situations.

Modifies or adapts established damage control techniques as necessary to meet local conditions and address specific environmental, economic or political considerations.

Assists in the negotiation of cooperative service agreements with landowners, lessees, or administrators to accomplish the goals outlined for the WS program.

Enters data into established WDM database/system of record. Uses data to prepare and submit routine reports regarding daily, weekly or monthly activities, observations, and events.

Assists in conducting demonstrations and training for others, including other cooperators or other interested groups, on WDM methods, procedures, and program objectives.

Complies with restrictions and mitigation measures established through consultation with relevant Federal and State agencies.

Carries out duties in accordance with program decisions made in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) under guidance and oversight by supervisor.

MINIMUM ELIGIBLITY REQUIREMENTS:

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a member of the hunter recruitment, retention, and reactivation program team, the R3 Coordinator – Alabama is an organized and self-motivated individual with a strong hunting and hunter education background. This individual assists Delta Waterfowl with a variety of tasks, the most critical being oversight and daily management of Delta Waterfowl’s First Hunt and University Hunting R3 programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Encourage and assist in the facilitation of Delta Waterfowl’s First Hunt program.
  2. Work with State agencies, Federal agencies, and other organizations to develop and enhance opportunities for chapter delivery of First Hunt events.
  3. Assist in the management of adequate inventory of First Hunt event and University Hunting Program supplies.
  4. Assist in the creation, maintenance, and updates of program evaluation tools and surveys to gather data on program participant outcomes and outputs.
  5. Keep and regularly update a database of First Hunt events and data gathered from the survey set.
  6. Provide regular updates on program and participant outcomes.
  7. Manage the operation of the Delta Waterfowl University Hunting Program.
  8. Conduct outreach to establish new programs on a regional basis.
  9. Work with state and federal agencies to enhance programming and make additional resources available.
  10. Coordinate with wildlife professors to provide an opportunity for future wildlife managers that will produce a more holistic view of hunting and the role that consumptive use plays in wildlife management.
  11. Assist with the creation, maintenance, and updates of program evaluation tools and surveys to gather data on program participant outcomes and outputs.
  12. Assist in keeping survey, regularly updating a database of University Hunting Program events and data gathered from survey set in assigned regions.
  13. Represent Delta at professional meetings, commonly including public presentations.
  14. Collaborate with Alabama R3 staff to align Delta’s R3 programming with ADCNR efforts in Alabama.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Mason Bend Plantation | Internship

General Overview

The internship at Mason Bend Plantation is a diverse and demanding position. However, it can provide a rewarding experience for students interested in holistic management of white-tailed deer, turkey, waterfowl, quail, and other wildlife on a free-ranging, private property. Specifically, interns will be involved in various forms of habitat and property management, which may include but not limited to planting, spraying, timber management, prescribed burning, supplemental feeding, hunting blind preparation, camera surveys, and grounds management.

Mason Bend Plantation is located in Hale County, AL and consists of 5,500+ acres of primarily forested land, with interspersed food plots and early successional areas. Two additional properties have recently been purchased that are managed primarily for waterfowl. Interns will be responsible for working alongside personnel to achieve desired landowner objectives for these properties.

Interns will be provided with on-site housing with utilities and be paid $14/hr. The work week is typically Monday – Friday and can be up to 40 hours/week. Internship opportunities may be available spring, summer, and/or fall. Intern start and finish dates are negotiable.

Job Requirements

  • Assist in the implementation of all wildlife and timber management practices
  • Help maintain all facilities, houses, grounds, equipment, roads, and assets of Mason Bend Plantation in clean and functional working condition
  • Work alongside of farm personnel to accomplish landowner goals and work responsibilities

Jones Center at Ichauway | Geospatial Analyst

The Jones Center at Ichauway invites applications for the Geospatial Analyst position. The successful candidate will lead the further development and maintenance of the Center’s extensive GIS database and associated systems in support of the Center’s scientific research, administrative, conservation and educational programs. This position reports to the Conservation Coordinator and works with staff in Research, Conservation and IT.

This position will work onsite at the Jones Center a 28,500-acre research center is in southwestern Georgia between Albany and Bainbridge. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs focus on ecology and natural resource management. The site includes 16,000 acres of longleaf pine forests, over 1,000 acres of wetlands, and 26 miles of stream and river ecosystems. Forest & Fire Ecology Lab - AU CFWE | Spring/Summer 2024

Dr. Heather Alexander is hiring field and lab research technicians to work in the Forest and Fire Ecology Lab at Auburn University for spring/summer 2024, starting between February and May 2024.

Must be able to commit 30-40 hours per week and travel for overnight, multi-day trips (up to a week) outside of Auburn.

The positions will include a combination of fieldwork and lab work. No prior experience necessary, but applicants must possess an interest in forest ecology, a willingness to learn, and be capable of (and excited about!) working long hours outdoors exposed to heat, cold, biting insects, and thorny vegetation.

Pay ranges from $12-$16/hour depending on education and experience.

Research technicians will gain experience collecting experimental and observational field data. Other tasks will include vegetation sampling, measuring plant traits, plant identification, data entry, and vegetation and soil sample processing in the lab.

I do contract work for large industrial-sized timberland owners as well as consult for smaller private landowners. I’m based out of Athens, GA with most of my work in the southeastern US. There are various projects I take out of state and currently working on one in eastern Alabama and western Georgia that may bring interest to students in the forestry program. This is a timber inventory project that allows competitive compensation, and of course, great, real world experience.

Wildlife Technician/Guide

Description: Twin Oaks Plantation is a fully commercial plantation located in Midway, AL. Applicants will have the opportunity to be a part of the day-to-day operation of a fully commercial quail plantation. This position will provide plenty of hands-on experience with various wildlife/habitat management techniques, as well as opportunities to guide hunts. This full-time position requires a dedicated hard-working individual.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Cutting/baling hay
  • Herbicide application
  • Operating tractors/ heavy equipment
  • Prescribed burning
  • Feeding dogs (some weekends included)
  • Guiding Hunts (quail, turkey, deer)
  • Filling feeders
  • Yard maintenance (when needed)
  • Catching/cleaning quail
  • Cleaning/preventative maintenance on equipment

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience on tractors/heavy equipment is preferred or must be willing to learn.
  • Must be punctual and self-motivated.
  • Knowledge of standard agricultural practices preferred.
  • Must be capable of intense physical labor.
  • Understanding of basic wildlife management practices or willing to learn.
  • Prior knowledge of bird dogs preferred or willing to learn.
  • Prior experience guiding hunts preferred.
  • Experience with hay preferred.

Compensation: Pay is hourly and based on prior experience. Hours vary seasonally but will include some weekend work.
