JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Forest Ranger is a critical role that protects our valuable forest resources by providing wildfire prevention and suppression, including responding to and actively fighting wildfires with heavy equipment.  The Forest Ranger will also support resource management through assistance with compliance activities such as site preparation, planting, and seedling survival inventories.

HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE:

  • As the principal operator of the fire suppression unit, you must be able to respond to wildfires in accordance with the Resource Unit fire management plan.  During periods of high fire danger, you must be in close proximity to fire unit and land base.
  • Perform fire prevention activities for the Resource Unit such as maintaining fire breaks, maintaining road rights-of-way for fire control, controlled burning, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the Resource Unit team in assisting with fire management plan development and implementation.
  • Assist Resource Managers with contract supervision of fire prevention activities.
  • Demonstrates safe working habits.
  • Responsible for fire unit maintenance and repair, budgeting, and related recordkeeping.
  • Assist the Resource Unit when necessary with contract compliance activities related to silvicultural and harvesting activities.
  • Assist with basic inventory projects, seedling survival, and data collection.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years’ experience in heavy equipment operation (2 years firefighting experience preferred)
  • CDL Required
  • Wildland fire fighting techniques, operation of crawler tractor during fire suppression, fire behavior, state BMP’s, basic equipment maintenance, general forestry land management practices
  • Must be able to traverse difficult terrain and be able to lift heavy items as required.  Must have or be willing to obtain a Certified Prescribed Burner certificate.

Wildland Firefighter - Apprentice

JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of the position is wildland fire suppression/management/control as a specialized firefighter on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of specialized tools or equipment.

DUTIES:

  • Duties listed are at full performance grade GW-05 level.
  • Serve on a wildland fire crew assigned to an engine, handcrew, or helitack module to suppress the full range of difficulty and complexity of fires.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

Examples of specialized experience may include: Performed natural resource support work, e.g., forestry, range, park technician, wildland firefighter, or similar jobs; performed routine support assignments in a forestry specialty area, e.g., wilderness, timber, fire prevention/control, etc.

For the GW-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GW-04 in the Federal service; -OR- Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, Fire Technology or other related fields of study, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

Examples of specialized experience may include: Patrolled areas of controlled fires to mop-up by searching out and extinguishing any remaining burning material; Served on a specialty crew (hotshot, helitack, engines, etc.) to suppress the full range of difficult and complex fires; Operated specialized fire suppression equipment such as portable pumps or drip torches.

Selective Placement Factors

To qualify at the GS-05 level the applicant must have successfully completed Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).

Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) and Forest Service – Fire Program Management (FS-FPM) qualifications must be met by the time of selection. Most recent IQCS master record and/or signed Agency Certified task book must be attached to your application. If you are selected, you may be required to submit an updated IQCS master record or signed Agency Certified task book as proof of attainment of IFPM requirements prior to a final verbal offer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Forestry Management Technician - Student Assistant

The undergraduate student will assist CFWE property managers with projects on AU lands in the Lee County area. These projects include cruising timber, marking boundary lines, field data collection, data entry, forest roads maintenance, weed control, assisting in prescribed fire application, invasive species management, and assisting with the general maintenance of AU forest lands. This position may also require traveling to properties such as MOT and Crooked Oaks to help host events/tours of these properties. The Forest Resilience Extension Associate will work with the Project Team, with primary responsibilities to design, manage, and implement Extension toolkits and outreach programs. QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Education: Bachelor’s in Environmental Education, Communication, Natural Resources, or related field.

The Division of Risk Management and Safety has an opening for an Environmental Protection Technician to support the AU Partnership with Fort Benning! This is an exciting opportunity to help support the Fort Benning environmental compliance program. The successful candidate will work alongside professionals in both Auburn University’s Environmental Health and Safety Department and the Ft. Benning Department of Public Works to assist with Ft. Benning’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans, prepares, coordinates and facilitates implementation of Fort Benning Phase II NPDES Stormwater Permit. Perform on-going inspections and provide technical assistance for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at Fort Benning construction sites.
  • Provide environmental consultation and support to assist units, government branches, and/or federal contractors with compliance regarding state, federal and DOD environmental regulations and guidelines including review of RECs / 144Rs.
  • Plans, prepares, and coordinates implementation of the Fort Benning Surface Mining Permit. Perform on-going inspections and provide technical assistance for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at Fort Benning Surface Mining Permitted borrow areas.
  • Participate in the chemical and/or hazardous materials emergency response team. Assists with spill cleanup, report spill to proper point of contacts, and file spill reports both internally and externally.
