Expertise: Cheng is an expert in research and development engineering and manufacturing for wood and wood products, engineered wood composites, wood-plastic composites, cellulosic fibers/nanofibers, nanocomposites, packaging, resins and additives, coatings, and other building and composite materials.

Research Interests: New forest biomaterials development and manufacturing such as wood waste reuse, soy, bio-oils and nanocellulose for wood adhesive modification; cellulose bio-based polymeric nanocomposites; isolation and characterization of cellulose nanofibers and nanocrystals; nano-scale mechanical testing; biofuels from biomass; exploring materials and markets for small-diameter timber; tree quality management, nondestructive measurements of trees and lumbers; cross-laminated timber (CLT); biomaterials for packaging; processing, microstructure, mechanical property and durability of wood-plastic composites, OSB, MDF, plywood, and other engineered composite materials.
