2026 CFWE Seminar Series — Aaron Shafer
January 21 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

SPEAKER: Dr. Aaron Shafer, Trent University
TITLE: A [genomic] history of deer
ABSTRACT: Genomic data has allowed for reconstructing speciation and demographic history of populations North American deer (Odocoileus) while now wide-spread, were once extirpated from the majority of their range. Using whole-genome sequencing data I present their dynamic history that shows no ancestral gene flow between recognized species, despite contemporary hybridization. I will also show the apparent impact of human intervention and over-harvest on genomic diversity and genetic health. Lastly, I will show how genomic tools can be used to identify the genes, and estimate the heritability, of key phenotypic traits that are of interest to management and conservation.
