Undergraduate Research
Drawing from nine research centers and the expertise of its faculty, College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment students have access to state-of-the-art labs, expansive field sites, and cutting-edge technological resources to support their research objectives. As graduates, students emerge ready to apply invaluable classroom and hands-on learning experiences to real-world management scenarios, giving them the knowledge, skills and ability to confidently advance in their education and careers.
The College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment, in conjunction with the Auburn University Office of Undergraduate Research, offers undergraduate students opportunities to gain valuable experience conducting their own research within any topic area associated with the college. Under the supervision of our faculty, students will develop research objectives, methodology, and manage the collection and analysis of data that will be used to test their hypothesis. With the approval and support of their faculty advisor, students may be offered the opportunity to publish and present their findings in a professional setting.
Our research seeks to support the sustainable management of forests, wildlife, and natural resources for the benefit of society. The college’s faculty, graduate students, and research professionals actively engage in diverse research within three broad areas of study that include:
- Forestry: Focuses on the sustainable use and management of forest resources including ecological restoration, forest pathology and entomology, biomaterials and products, policy and economics, and operations.
- Wildlife Sciences: This research area seeks to develop knowledge to guide the sustainable management and use of wildlife and their habitats to assure healthy populations for current and future generations.
- Ecosystems & Society: Highly relevant to the quality of people’s lives, this research contributes to the development of policy and management strategies for land use, public health, and natural resources.
According to the American Association of Colleges and Universities, undergraduate research has been identified as one of the top ten high-impact educational experiences. During their undergraduate research experience, students may assist faculty and graduate students to locate and manage project sites, collect, analyze, and catalog field data to test research hypotheses, and develop publications and materials to communicate scientific results. With the support of our faculty, students may also travel to and participate in domestic or international conferences to present research to the scientific community.
