Courtney Ortel, a recent graduate of the Wildlife Sciences Pre‑Veterinary Medicine major from Huntsville, Alabama, credits the hands-on learning and real-world applications of her classroom studies as the defining experiences of her time in the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment (CFWE).

Her favorite class, Habitat Management with Associate Professor Dr. Will Gulsby, brought together many of the concepts and skills she built throughout her coursework and allowed her to apply them in practical, meaningful ways. The class strengthened her understanding of wildlife management while reinforcing how classroom knowledge translates directly to the field.

When it comes to mentorship, Ortel points to Dr. Wesley Anderson as an especially influential wildlife professor. During the past four years, Anderson’s kindness, patience and unwavering support have made a lasting impact. He consistently encourages students to get involved in wildlife-related opportunities and helps them connect with the resources needed to grow as wildlife professionals, says Ortel.

One of Ortel’s most valuable experiences at Auburn was participating in the CFWE’s wildlife management study abroad trip in South Africa. During the two‑week course in Eswatini and South Africa, she explored how culture, history, government and ecology intersect to shape wildlife management practices. Experiencing the region’s landscapes and wildlife firsthand was unforgettable and truly the trip of a lifetime.

Looking ahead, Ortel will attend the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. With a goal of working in wildlife management or research as a veterinarian, she’s excited to continue building her skills and contributing to the future of wildlife conservation.
