Auburn University’s College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment (CFWE) is honored to announce the Kent Fulton Gilliland Endowed Professorship, created by David “Dave” Gilliland and Mrs. Sandra “Sandy” Gilliland. Established in memory of their son, Kent Gilliland, the professorship reflects the family’s deep connection to Auburn and their desire to support faculty who will inspire future generations of forestry and natural resource professionals.
Kent was born on Feb. 5, 1984, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and later moved with his family to Greensboro, North Carolina. As a student, he graduated near the top of his class at Southeast Guilford High School. He loved baseball, cooking, following Auburn sports and spending time outdoors, where his fascination with trees truly began.
Kent’s interest in forestry was self‑driven and lifelong. He became an expert in tree identification, often visiting state parks across the country to photograph, measure and study record‑size trees. Even while working for Covenant Transport, he continued deepening his knowledge, earning his Master Trainer License and several safety awards. His curiosity, intelligence and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
The endowed professorship created in his memory honors Kent’s legacy by supporting a faculty member who embodies excellence in teaching, research and service. To qualify for the Kent Fulton Gilliland Endowed Professorship, the chosen faculty member must show a strong commitment to their students and instruction, serve as a positive role model and work to enhance the overall forestry program.
“The Gilliland family’s generosity strengthens Auburn’s commitment to excellence in forestry education and research,” said Janaki Alavalapati, the Emmett F. Thompson Dean of the CFWE. “By investing in faculty who mentor students, advance knowledge and serve our profession, this professorship will create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom and leave a lasting impact on the forestry community.”
The Gilliland family is helping ensure that Auburn students learn from educators who inspire curiosity, encourage exploration and prepare them for meaningful careers in forestry and natural resources. This professorship strengthens the college’s academic foundation while honoring a life defined by kindness, curiosity and a deep love for the outdoors. With this endowment, Kent’s legacy will continue to inspire students, support faculty and fulfill Auburn’s commitment to environmental stewardship for years to come.
