Suanne Gilbert, an exemplary employee in the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment (CFWE) at Auburn University, was recently honored with the Auburn Spirit of Excellence Award for November.

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the university’s mission and celebrates individuals who consistently exceed expectations, elevate the quality of service and positively impact the Auburn community.

For Gilbert, who has devoted 24 years to Auburn, her approach to work is grounded in a quiet commitment to excellence.

Her recognition is a testament to her incredible work ethic, reliability and selflessness.

“I was shocked when I received the award,” Gilbert said. “I’ve always just done my job and tried to help wherever I can, so being recognized in this way was unexpected but very meaningful.”

As a vital member of the CFWE, Gilbert is responsible for a range of essential tasks, from managing purchasing and transactions to processing travel reimbursements and overseeing professional services contracts.

These critical responsibilities may not always be in the spotlight, but they are the backbone of the college’s smooth operations.

Paula Davis, Gilbert’s supervisor and CFWE finance director, said, “Her cheerful demeanor and eagerness to help have earned her high praise from those she supports. Suanne consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that essential tasks are addressed for the college.”

Her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to take on additional responsibilities have earned her the respect and admiration of those who work with her.

Gilbert’s impact goes far beyond her daily duties. She played a pivotal role in the pilot phase of Auburn’s new travel system and purchasing cards, ensuring their successful implementation.

Prior to joining the CFWE in 2011, she worked in grants administration at Auburn, where her assignments were often short-term, based on the duration of funding cycles.

The transition to the CFWE allowed her to take a more permanent role, where her expertise has become invaluable.

While Gilbert’s work has been central to behind-the-scenes operations, she recognizes the importance of recognition in motivating others.

“An award like this helps show that your hard work is valued,” she said. “It’s not just about being told ‘good job’ by your boss or colleagues. Having your efforts recognized with an award makes it feel more solid.”

Reflecting on her tenure at Auburn, she takes pride in the unique perspective she has gained as both a former student and now a staff member.

“It’s interesting to see how both sides work,” she said. “As a student, there’s a lot you don’t understand about how the university operates. But now, being on this side of the desk, I see how everything comes together to support the students.”

Through her decades of service, Gilbert has contributed to the CFWE’s efficiency and set an example for what it means to serve with integrity and dedication.

Her work ethic, kindness and humility have left a mark on Auburn, and her recognition with the Spirit of Excellence Award is a well-deserved tribute to the lasting impact she continues to make.

As a monthly award recipient, Gilbert will be eligible to receive the Employee of the Year Spirit of Excellence Award. The winners will be announced and recognized at the annual Employee Recognition Award ceremony, held each spring.
