SUMMARY:Getting the Most from Your Forestland
DESCRIPTION:Forestland owners should plan to attend Getting the Most from Your Forestland\, the latest forestry workshop from Alabama Extension. It will be Aug. 28\, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Scottsboro VFW Post in Scottsboro\, Alabama. This workshop is free and provides all materials and lunch. \nThis workshop is a joint effort between the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Jackson County Natural Resources Planning Committee with partial funding from USDA-NRCS. \nTopics Covered \nNorm Haley\, an Alabama Extension regional agent forestry\, wildlife and natural resources agent\, said this workshop will cover a variety of topics intended to help forest owners fully utilize their land. \n“This workshop is geared toward private forest owners to help them better recognize the economic value of their forests\,” Haley said. “It also educates them on the availability of resources and support related to proper forest management and making use of local markets.” \nTopics of information discussed at the event include: \nthe forest industry\nnon-timber income\ntimber markets\nproducing income\nagency support\nfinancial assistance\nconsultants\nAdditionally\, the program will discuss alternative forest products which also have value\, such as pine straw\, specialty wood products and others. \n“This is a unique opportunity for forest owners to hear presentations from Alabama Extension and Alabama Forestry Commission specialists\, the USDA-NRCS and a local consulting forester\,” Haley said. “Also\, this is a chance for them to see a portable sawmill demonstration\, which is a tool and business opportunity that remains in high demand throughout the Southeast.” \nRegistration \nRegister for the workshop by phone or mail.
