SUMMARY:SFWS Seminar Series - Gloria Oporto
DESCRIPTION:Gloria S. Oporto\, Associate Professor\, School of Natural Resources\, West Virginia University\n“Nanocellulose applications: Current research at West Virginia University” \nSeminar is held at 11 a.m. in Classroom 1221 in the SFWS Building\, 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, AL. \n\nFaculty\, students and the public are invited to attend this free program.\nComplimentary cookies and coffee will be served.\nCFEs are available by request.\nAdvanced registration is not required.\nParking is available on the 3rd and 4th floors of the South Quad parking deck on Duncan Drive\, directly across from the SFWS Building. See Parking Services on Level 2 to obtain a visitor pass.\n\nAbstract:  Currently in the Appalachian region there is a vast amount of low-value\, low quality hardwood that can be potentially used as feedstock for novel bio-products. Only West Virginia generates 2.41 million dry tones of underutilized wood per year that represents a great source for nanocellulose production. Today the technology to separate and obtain wood polymers at nanoscale exists and it has been demonstrated with success; however\, specific applications for these novel raw materials are still a challenge. At West Virginia University we have been developing the scientific and technological basis to utilize lignocellulosic sources as a novel templates for organic and inorganic chemical compounds and promote their utilization in applications related to the packaging\, catalyst and medical/pharmaceutical fields. \nBiography:  Dr. Gloria S. Oporto is a faculty member in the School of Natural Resources at West Virginia University (WVU). She completed her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Concepción\, Chile\, and continued working at the University of Concepcion as a Research Engineer in areas that included wood chemistry\, wood-based composites\, and energy from woody biomass. She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Forest Resources and her certificate in Advanced Engineered Wood Composites from the University of Maine in December\, 2009. Dr. Oporto has been working at WVU since June\, 2010 and she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016 in the Wood Science and Technology Program. Her main interests are focused in nanomaterials and its application in advanced composites\, and biomaterials from lignocellulosic sources.

SUMMARY:MS Seminar - Max Birdsong
DESCRIPTION:M.S. Seminar: Max Birdsong\, Maj. Prof\, Dr. Wayde Morse \n\n\nTitle: Exploring the Social Habitat of Alabama Public Land Hunters \nLocation: Dixon Conference Room 3315 \nDate: Wednesday\, May 8\, 2019 \nTime: 9 a.m. \nAbstract: \nThe United States has been facing a decline in the number of licensed hunters since around 1980\, posing a serious threat to state conservation agencies who receive funding from hunting license sales. Recent research suggests that this decline can be tied to demographic trends in the United States – such as urbanization\, diversification\, and an aging population – because they have altered hunting society\, or the “social habitat” for hunting. The social habitat for hunting is comprised of multiple levels of factors influencing hunting behavior\, these levels range from individual-level (e.g.\, family support) to very broad (e.g.\, world news). Conventional hunter recruitment\, retention\, and reactivation (R3) research has been focused on factors at the individual level. While these individual level factors are important\, over-emphasis on their influence has created a gap of information concerning the roles of broader social forces on R3. We developed a survey questionnaire to understand the broader social forces affecting R3\, such as demographics\, socialization into hunting\, and public land use. We examined differences in the recruitment and retention for non-traditional hunting populations (e.g.\, females\, adult-onset hunters\, urban hunters). The items affecting recruitment and retention for these groups was different than for traditional hunting populations. Additionally\, we modelled the preferences of public land hunters for WMAs to determine which attributes drive hunting participation. We found site-specific characteristics that predict visitation. Preferences for certain attributes also varied by type of game species targeted. These findings have practical significance for state agencies\, and contribute to the understanding of the social habitat for hunting.

SUMMARY:Ph.D. Seminar: Natascha Ivy-Israel
DESCRIPTION:Ph.D. Seminar: Natascha Ivy-Israel\, Maj. Prof\, Dr. Steve Ditchkoff \nTitle: How does the major histocompatibility complex influence reproductive success in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)? \nLocation: Dixon Executive Conference Room\, 3315 \nDate: Thursday\, July 18\, 2019 \nTime: 8 a.m. \nAbstract: \nMajor histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene products can influence sexual selection through their impact on the vertebrate immune system. Individuals with greater MHC diversity are generally believed to have more effective immune systems\, thereby allowing these individuals to allocate more resources towards growth and reproduction. However\, maximum MHC diversity may be too costly for the individual\, suggesting that maximum diversity is not always optimal. This research examined how MHC diversity\, measured as pairwise allelic distances between two unlinked MHC type II loci (exon 2 for the classical antigen-binding protein MHC-DRB\, exon 2 for the accessory protein MHC-DOB) influenced morphology (Chapter 2)\, annual reproductive success (Chapter 3)\, and pre- and post-copulatory selection (Chapter 4) in an enclosed white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population in Alabama. To generate these allelic distances\, we first sequenced the second exons of MHC-DRB and MHC-DOB on the MiSeq platform (Chapter 1). Since studies conducted with domestic ruminants found a unique MHC II gene structure in which MHC-DRB and MHC-DOB were separated by a recombination hotspot due to an ancestral chromosomal inversion\, we also assessed the degree of linkage between these loci in white-tailed deer.

SUMMARY:MS Seminar - Carolyn Moore
DESCRIPTION:M.S. Seminar: Carolyn Moore\, Maj. Prof\, Stephen Ditchkoff \n\n\nTitle: Reproductive success in white-tailed deer: using structural equation modeling to understand the causal relationships of MHC\, age\, and morphology \nLocation: Dixon Conference Room 3315 \nDate: Tuesday\, July 30\, 2019 \nTime: 9 a.m. \nAbstract: \nUnderstanding factors that influence reproductive success is of utmost importance to the study of wildlife population dynamics. There are a multitude of factors that can influence a male’s ability to acquire mates\, such as morphology\, age\, or genetic components\, all of which have the potential to impact one another. One genetic component of interest is the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). MHC genetic diversity has been linked to differences in physiology\, morphology\, and secondary sex characteristic production. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are an ideal model species for evaluating influences on reproductive success because they are a well-studied game species\, they possess an easily measured secondary sex characteristic\, and because of their high genetic diversity for MHC. Before we could begin analysis\, we first characterized the MHC-DRB alleles present in our population. We then used structural equation modeling to examine potential causal relationships between MHC genetic diversity\, morphology\, age\, and annual reproductive success for male white-tailed deer.

SUMMARY:2019 Graduate Research Symposium & Reception
DESCRIPTION:The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences will present the 2019 Graduate Research Symposium immediately following a talk by Dr. R. Quinn Thomas of Virginia Tech on Wednesday\, Nov. 20. \nThomas will give a talk titled\, “Ecological Forecasting: Anticipating the Future of Forests and Freshwaters\,” that will discuss the novel use of integrative data and models to make explicit predictive forecasts that will allow scientists to better anticipate and respond to major environmental changes impacting ecosystem services. \nThe free seminar\, which is open to the public and all members of the campus community\, will be held at 11 a.m. in the conference hall\, room 1101\, located on the first floor of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Building at 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, Alabama. \nThe Graduate Research Symposium and Reception will immediately follow the lecture at 12 p.m. in the conference hall. The presentation will highlight the diversity of the school’s research program and provide graduate students the opportunity to present their research to stakeholders and members of the academic community. \nThis is a complimentary event for faculty\, staff\, and students. Light refreshments and free parking are offered for attendees. Parking will be available on the third and fourth levels of the South Quad Parking Deck. Advanced registration and parking passes are not required. \nSeminar Abstract:\nThe 21st century has been and will continue to be characterized by major environmental changes to the ecosystem services upon which society depends. Anticipating and responding to these changes requires the development of novel approaches that integrate data and models to make explicit predictive forecasts in real-time. Furthermore\, forecasting involves generating quantitative hypotheses about the state of ecological systems before observations are collected\, thus representing one of the strongest tests of our foundational understanding of ecological dynamics. As a result\, the cycle of creating forecasts\, evaluating them using observations\, and revising ecological hypotheses and models based on that feedback has the potential to accelerate our learning across many disciplines within ecology. The seminar will explore the emerging field of ecological forecasting using two examples: forecasts of loblolly pine productivity across the Southeastern U.S. based on a model constrained by decades of forestry research and forecasts of water quality in a drinking water reservoir based on real-time integration with sensor networks. \nBiography:  Dr. R. Thomas Quinn Thomas is an associate professor in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech. Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Tech\, he was a post-doctoral scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Dr. Thomas’ Ph.D. is from Cornell University\, M.S. from the University of New Hampshire\, and A.B. from Dartmouth College. He has been awarded the Ecological Forecasting Prize by the Ecological Society of America and is the principal investigator on the NSF-sponsored Ecological Forecasting Initiative Research Coordination Network. His research focuses on developing a predictive understanding of ecosystems\, including forest and freshwaters\, using a range of computational methods and ecosystem observations. \n
