DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Dr. Raymond Iglay\, Mississippi State University \nTITLE: Lessons learned during chaos \nABSTRACT: Who am I and how did I get here? No\, Dr. Iglay is not that old\, but he is ready to reflect on the lessons learned\, the research foundations built\, and the future research and teaching directions he envisions during an engaging 45-minute journey. \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Raymond Iglay\, Certified Wildlife Biologist®\, is an Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Wildlife\, Fisheries\, and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University (MSU)\, Graduate Program Coordinator\, faculty liaison for the Wildlife Services National Training Academy\, and Fellow of The Wildlife Society (TWS). Dr. Iglay received a dual B.S. degree in Wildlife Conservation and Entomology with Distinction from the University of Delaware in 2003\, and a M.S. in Wildlife Science and Ph.D. in Forest Resources from MSU in 2007 and 2010\, respectively. His research focuses on practical\, science-based approaches to restoration\, damage mitigation\, and emerging technologies in wildlife management. Dr. Iglay teaches three courses and volunteers often for TWS-related activities. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of SEAFWA. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Dr. Aaron Shafer\, Trent University \nTITLE: A [genomic] history of deer \nABSTRACT: Genomic data has allowed for reconstructing speciation and demographic history of populations  North American deer (Odocoileus) while now wide-spread\, were once extirpated from the majority of their range. Using whole-genome sequencing data I present their dynamic history that shows no ancestral gene flow between recognized species\, despite contemporary hybridization. I will also show the apparent impact of human intervention and over-harvest on genomic diversity and genetic health. College Street in Auburn\, Ala. \nThis lecture series in forest economics and policy was established in the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment by the College’s founding dean\, Emmett F. Thompson\, and his wife\, ViAnn. The annual series will enrich the college’s academic programs with speakers of national and international acclaim who possess expertise in forestry and natural resources with a focus on forest economics and policy. \nTitle: Forest Finance and Economics: Making Investment Decisions in Times of Uncertainty\n\nLecture Abstract:\nInvestment decisions in forestry and all other asset classes are not made in vacuums. The physical facts on the ground\, the priorities of key stakeholders and the external policy environment affect the economic context in which these decisions are made. Within a framework that accounts for financial objectives\, what do the economics of the south’s forest industry and timberland sectors indicate about the sector’s future competitiveness? What lessons can we draw that might apply more generally when making choices with emerging markets and assets associated with the natural environment?\n\nSpeaker Biography:\nBrooks Mendell possesses three decades of consulting\, operating and research experience in the forest products and timber industries. His experience includes roles in harvest operations and procurement with Weyerhaeuser\, in management consulting with Accenture and as a faculty member in forestry and finance at the University of Georgia (UGA). A Fulbright Scholar in Uruguay\, Mendell founded Forisk in 2004. He has broad domestic and international experience supporting small businesses\, Fortune 500 corporations and public organizations. Agrawal\, who is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences\, will give a lecture titled “Transformative Change and Global Sustainability” on Tuesday\, Feb. 18\, 2025\, at 2 p.m.\, immediately followed by a reception at the Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building located at 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, Ala. \nLecture Title: Transformative Change and Global Sustainability \nLecture Abstract: As the calamities of climate change\, biodiversity loss and sociopolitical polarization gather pace\, researchers and decision-makers are calling for transformative change. Global sustainability remains a chimera without transformative change\, especially in preventing biodiversity loss and nature’s decline. Drawing upon three years of work by more than 80 scientists from 30 countries\, Agrawal’s lecture will define and characterize transformative change and examine the role of visions\, scenarios and action theories in achieving it. It will also assess some of the most promising strategies and options that may lead to transformative change for achieving the vision of the 2050 Global Biodiversity Framework.\n\nSpeaker Biography: Arun Agrawal is the Pulte Family Professor and founding director of the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative in the Keough School of Global Affairs at The University of Notre Dame. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences. Agrawal’s research focuses broadly on the political economy of resource governance and development with a particular focus on commons and commoning. His recent research interests concern the relationship of climate change with health and conflict. Agrawal’s instructional interests concern social action and change. \nWeaver Lecture Series Seminar\nThe Weaver Lecture Series was established in 1996 through an endowment provided by Earl H. and Sandra H. Weaver. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Dr. Vic Adamowicz\, University of Alberta\, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus \nTITLE: Measuring the impact of a wildlife disease on hunting behavior through recreational lottery applications: The case of Chronic Wasting Disease in Alberta\, Canada \nABSTRACT: If an environmental quality change affects a resource allocated using a lottery-rationing system\, activity levels (e.g. trips) may remain constant while applications vary. This presentation will describe our analysis using multiple reduced-form models to examine the impact of a wildlife disease on application behavior in a lottery rationed resource. We use hunting license application data for antlered mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Alberta\, Canada from 2001 to 2022 and examine the impact of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). CWD is a 100% fatal prion disease and has the potential to diminish cervid populations (i.e. deer\, moose\, elk\, and caribou) and affect various segments of society including recreational hunters. Our findings show that increasing CWD prevalence reduces demand for hunting applications but the pattern of impact suggests a complex behavioral response to the disease. The presentation will also include a description of complementary analyses that are components of an interdisciplinary approach to addressing CWD in Alberta. Dr. Adamowicz will also discuss contemporary academic research issues in forestry\, natural resources and the environment in Canada. \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Vic Adamowicz is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology at the University of Alberta where he has made significant contributions to the fields of environmental economics and natural resource management. He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Alberta (1981\, 1983) and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1988. Throughout his career\, Dr. Adamowicz’s research has focused on the valuation of environmental goods and services\, as well as the economic analysis of natural resource policies and choice behavior with applications to food demand\, recreation\, and environmental quality. His work has helped shape the understanding of how economic principles can be applied to sustainability and resource conservation. With numerous published studies and a long-standing commitment to academic excellence\, Dr. Adamowicz has earned recognition as a leading figure in his field. His distinguished career includes not only impactful research\, but also mentorship of graduate students and collaborative efforts with government agencies and industry partners to address pressing environmental challenges. Dr. Adamowicz is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada\, Academy II – Social Sciences (awarded in 2007).
