College Street in Auburn\, Ala. A reception will follow at 3:30 p.m. \nThis lecture series in forest economics and policy was established in the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment by the college’s founding dean\, Emmett F. Thompson\, and his wife\, ViAnn. The annual series was created to enrich its academic programs with speakers of national and international acclaim who possess expertise in forestry and natural resources with a focus on forest economics and policy. \nLecture Title \nIt Pays to Be Different: The History and Future of One of America’s Most Enduring Forest Products Family Firms \nAbstract \nCade Warner\, president and CEO of The Westervelt Company\, will present a strategic overview of the Alabama forest products industry through the lens of a 140-year-old family-owned enterprise. This lecture will explore how The Westervelt Company has sustained long-term success by embracing differentiation\, innovation\, sustainability and disciplined leadership across generations. \nAttendees will gain insight into the company’s historical evolution\, current operational model and forward-looking strategy for navigating market volatility\, regulatory shifts and environmental imperatives. Warner will discuss how Westervelt balances the complex dynamics of family ownership\, industry trends\, economic pressures and stakeholder engagement while managing a diverse portfolio of operating entities. \nThe lecture will also cover Warner’s outlook on timberland and forest products markets\, including key opportunities and risks shaped by policy\, consumer behavior and global sustainability movements. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of strategic resilience\, stakeholder alignment and the unique challenges of leading a legacy business in a modern economy. \nBiography \nA native of Tuscaloosa\, Alabama\, Cade Warner is the president and CEO of The Westervelt Company. He received a bachelor’s degree in commerce and business administration from the University of Alabama\, a master’s in business administration from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in forest resources with a specialization in forest business from the University of Georgia. In addition\, he is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®)\, Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA®) and Financial and Modeling Valuation Analyst (FMVA®) professional designations. \nPrior to becoming CEO\, Warner’s experience included his role as chief operating officer\, where he was responsible for the five business operations of The Westervelt Company – Forest Resources\, Wood Products\, Ecological Services\, Real Estate and New Zealand\, as well as Business Development and Information Services. He also served as chief sustainability officer\, where he was responsible for leading sustainability efforts across the organization\, as well as having responsibility for Westervelt Ecological Services\, Westervelt New Zealand and Westervelt Real Estate businesses. Warner previously served as director of business development and improvement\, where he was responsible for the company’s strategic planning\, business development and business improvement functions\, and as the continuous improvement manager\, where he oversaw the development and implementation of the company’s continuous improvement program\, Growing Excellence. \nWarner has been\, and continues to be\, involved with many community leadership groups\, including the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors\, Leadership Tuscaloosa\, Leadership Alabama\, United Way of West Alabama’s Young Leadership Society\, Rotary International and the Tuscaloosa Rotary Foundation Board. No\, Dr. Iglay is not that old\, but he is ready to reflect on the lessons learned\, the research foundations built\, and the future research and teaching directions he envisions during an engaging 45-minute journey. \nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Raymond Iglay\, Certified Wildlife Biologist®\, is an Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Wildlife\, Fisheries\, and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University (MSU)\, Graduate Program Coordinator\, faculty liaison for the Wildlife Services National Training Academy\, and Fellow of The Wildlife Society (TWS). Dr. Iglay received a dual B.S. degree in Wildlife Conservation and Entomology with Distinction from the University of Delaware in 2003\, and a M.S. in Wildlife Science and Ph.D. in Forest Resources from MSU in 2007 and 2010\, respectively. His research focuses on practical\, science-based approaches to restoration\, damage mitigation\, and emerging technologies in wildlife management. Dr. Iglay teaches three courses and volunteers often for TWS-related activities. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of SEAFWA. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Dr. Aaron Shafer\, Trent University \nTITLE: A [genomic] history of deer \nABSTRACT: Genomic data has allowed for reconstructing speciation and demographic history of populations  North American deer (Odocoileus) while now wide-spread\, were once extirpated from the majority of their range. Using whole-genome sequencing data I present their dynamic history that shows no ancestral gene flow between recognized species\, despite contemporary hybridization. I will also show the apparent impact of human intervention and over-harvest on genomic diversity and genetic health. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nThe College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment’s inaugural Emmett & ViAnn Thompson Lecture in Forest Economics and Policy will proudly present Thompson Distinguished Lecturer Brooks Mendell\, president and CEO of Forisk Consulting\, on Thursday\, Feb. 27\, at 2 p.m. at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center located at 241 S. College Street in Auburn\, Ala. \nThis lecture series in forest economics and policy was established in the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment by the College’s founding dean\, Emmett F. Thompson\, and his wife\, ViAnn. The annual series will enrich the college’s academic programs with speakers of national and international acclaim who possess expertise in forestry and natural resources with a focus on forest economics and policy. \nTitle: Forest Finance and Economics: Making Investment Decisions in Times of Uncertainty\n\nLecture Abstract:\nInvestment decisions in forestry and all other asset classes are not made in vacuums. The physical facts on the ground\, the priorities of key stakeholders and the external policy environment affect the economic context in which these decisions are made. Within a framework that accounts for financial objectives\, what do the economics of the south’s forest industry and timberland sectors indicate about the sector’s future competitiveness? What lessons can we draw that might apply more generally when making choices with emerging markets and assets associated with the natural environment?\n\nSpeaker Biography:\nBrooks Mendell possesses three decades of consulting\, operating and research experience in the forest products and timber industries. His experience includes roles in harvest operations and procurement with Weyerhaeuser\, in management consulting with Accenture and as a faculty member in forestry and finance at the University of Georgia (UGA). A Fulbright Scholar in Uruguay\, Mendell founded Forisk in 2004. He has broad domestic and international experience supporting small businesses\, Fortune 500 corporations and public organizations. An inductee in the Georgia Foresters Hall of Fame\, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, an MBA at the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in forest finance at UGA. \nEvent Details:\nAuburn University faculty\, staff\, students\, alumni and industry professionals are welcome to attend the lecture and reception taking place at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center Auditorium and Grand Ballroom.
