DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Chuck Hemard\, Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Auburn University\, who will give a talk titled ‘Longleaf Pine\, a photographic artist’s perspective’ on Tuesday\, Jan. 24\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. Refreshments will be available after the seminar\, and CFEs are available upon request. See the full spring seminar schedule here. \nIn Hemard’s photographic exploration of remnant old-growth longleaf pinelands\, he is after a sense of the momentous and sacred\, what he can experience in the present that gives a tiny glimpse of insight into both past and future. In this talk\, Hemard will discuss this exploration\, his creative research process\, and his belief that art and science are essential partners in helping us to understand the nature and value of longleaf pine ecosystems.  \nChuck Hemard is an Associate Professor in Auburn University’s Department of Art and Art History. He is a lifelong resident of the American South. His recent photographs are mostly made with large format film cameras\, exploring the complexities of the contemporary landscape. Hemard’s photographs have been exhibited nationally and are included in museum collections across the southeast United States\, including the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens\, GA\, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans\, among others. In 2018\, Hemard published a monograph that explores remnants of old-growth longleaf pinelands across the Deep South. The work was featured in Smithsonian Magazine (online)\, Hyperallergic\, Garden and Gun Magazine\, and Oxford American.  Faculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Wayde Morse\, Professor of Natural Resources Sociology\, who will give a talk titled ‘Establishing study abroad programs: a wide array of options ‘ on Tuesday\, Jan. 31\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. See the full spring seminar schedule here. \nIn Dr. Morse’s talk\, he will share how study-abroad programs can be life-changing experiences for students and instructors. He will share his experiences\, perspectives\, and recommendations on developing and conducting popular and effective programs.  \nDr. Wayde Morse is a conservation social scientist who has lived\, studied\, researched\, worked\, and taught internationally for the past 25 years. He began his international focus with a semester study abroad in New Zealand and then served with the Peace Corps in Panama. As a Ph.D. student\, he was Fellow in a National Science Foundation Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Research Traineeship (IGERT) involving research in Costa Rica on their ambitious conservation program of Payments for Ecosystem Services. In addition to his on-campus classes and research at Auburn University\, Dr. Morse has developed and taught courses including Watershed Services in Costa Rica\, Nature Based Tourism in New Zealand\, Cultural Tourism in Fiji\, and People and the Environment in Spain\, as well as a pre-freshman study abroad to Belize on Sustainable Tourism for the Office of International Programs. Dr. Morse has developed and led his own programs and collaborated with the University of Georgia\, Auburn University’s College of Human Sciences\, the Honors College\, the Office of International Programs\, and the Provost’s office to facilitate programs.\nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:The Auburn University College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment’s 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Dr. Jayme Waldron\, a Department of Biological Sciences professor at Marshall University\, Huntington\, West Virginia. Dr. Waldron will give a talk titled ‘The long and short of it: Insights from Crotalus rattlesnake monitoring programs’ on Tuesday\, Feb. 7\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. Refreshments will be available after the seminar\, and CFEs are available upon request. \nIn Dr. Waldron’s talk\, she will discuss applied conservation approaches and outcomes derived from short- and long-term Crotalus rattlesnake research programs. She will present life history data and discuss difficulties and limitations associated with low detection probabilities of eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus). \nDr. Jayme Waldron is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Marshall University. She grew up in West Virginia and received her B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources from West Virginia University in 1998\, her M.S. in Biological Sciences from Marshall University in 2000\, and her Ph.D. at Clemson University in 2005. She has been studying eastern diamondback rattlesnakes in South Carolina for 23 years. \nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. SUMMARY:2023 CFWE Spring Seminar Series - Kelsey McCune
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Kelsey McCune\, Affiliate Assistant Professor\, who will give a talk titled ‘Avian behavioral ecology in a changing world and implications for conservation’ on Tuesday\, Feb. 14\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment (CFWE) Building. See the full spring seminar schedule here. \nIn this talk Dr. McCune will describe her research evaluating variation in avian behavior and cognition as it relates to rapid environmental change. In addition\, she will briefly highlight the research she will focus on with the CFWE. \nDr. Kelsey McCune is an ecologist who studies individual differences in behavior and cognition in wildlife species. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and a PhD in Animal Behavior from the University of Washington. She has been supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship\, an NSF-sponsored internship at the Smithsonian National Zoo\, and a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Dr. McCune’s research has helped bridge the fields of animal behavior and wildlife management by examining links between aspects of behavior and niche specialization\, resource acquisition in novel environments\, and biological invasions. In her new role as affiliate faculty with the CFWE\, she looks forward to continuing this important work through faculty collaborations and student mentoring. Faculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Jason White\, Director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, who will give a talk titled ‘Nanotechnology-enabled agriculture: A path to global food security?’ on Tuesday\, Feb. 21\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. See the full spring seminar schedule here. \nIn White’s talk\, he will discuss how the use and delivery efficiency of conventional agrichemicals is a significant impediment to maintaining global food security\, particularly given that a 60-70% increase in food production is needed by 2050 to support the projected population. White and his team are using nanotechnology as a novel and sustainable strategy to increase the delivery efficiency and efficacy of nutrients and pesticides\, harnessing the ability to effectively tune nanoscale material structure and composition to maximize benefit and reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment.  \nDr. Jason C. White is the Director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, the oldest Agricultural Experiment Station in the United States and has a research program on food safety and security\, with a focus on sustainable nano-enabled agriculture. Dr. White was elected to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering in 2021 and is a member of the European Science Foundation College of Experts. He is a Commissioned Official of the US FDA and a Clarivate Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher from 2020-2022. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Cornell University in 1997 and has secondary appointments in the Yale University School of Public Health and the University of Massachusetts Stockbridge School of Agriculture.  \nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. See the full spring schedule here. \nDr. Schulz’s talk will discuss the question\, “can we identify invasive forest insects before they invade?” Dr. Schulz will share the origin story of a cool\, new tool called i-Tree Pest Predictor.   \n \nDr. Ashley Schulz earned her B.S. in Forestry from the University of Missouri-Columbia\, M.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia\, and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Arkansas State University. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University. Her research interests broadly include forest ecology\, forest health\, and preventing and managing forest disturbances. Specifically\, her research currently focuses on developing a tool that can predict the next high-impact insect invaders in North American urban and natural forests\, and monitoring and controlling invasive species\, such as cogongrass\, in southeastern forest ecosystems. Faculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Douglas Gardner\, Professor and Program Leader of of Forest Operations\, Bioproducts & Bioenergy in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine and member of the Advanced Structures & Composites Center\, who will give a talk titled ‘Large scale additive manufacturing with forest-based composite feedstocks’ on Tuesday\, March 28\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. See the full spring schedule here. \nThis presentation will discuss ongoing work at the University of Maine in large scale additive manufacturing (AM) using forest-based composite feedstocks. Dr. Gardner will explain how large scale AM with forest-based feedstocks offers opportunities to manufacturing products that can be used in a variety of applications including building and construction\, marine tooling and infrastructure applications. BioHome3D\, the first 3D-printed house manufactured from wood fibers and bio-resins\, will be show cased.  \nDouglas J. Gardner is Professor and Program Leader of Sustainable Materials and Technology in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine. He is also a member of the Advanced Structures and Composites Center and Forest Bioproducts Research Institute. He is the scientific co-leader for the UMaine-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Hub and Spoke Program focusing on developing and optimizing the production and integration of bio-based materials and next-generation manufacturing systems into mainstream manufacturing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Gardner’s research\, teaching\, and service activities address polymer processing and interfacial science aspects of wood-polymer composite materials. Gardner is a Fellow and past president of the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST). He was awarded the SWST Distinguished Service Award in 2014 and the SWST Distinguished Educator Award in 2018. Faculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Abraham Joy\, Professor in the Department of Polymer Science at the University of Akron\, who will give a talk titled ‘Challenges of chronic wound healing as an inspiration for the development of a peptide-like polymer platform‘ on Tuesday\, April 4\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building. See the full spring schedule here. \nDr. Joy will describe the development of a modular polymer platform that mimics the structural diversity of peptides. The versatility of the platform is being used to address the challenges of chronic wound healing while addressing bacterial biofilms and the resultant non-healing wounds. \nDr. Abraham Joy is a professor of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at the University of Akron. The Joy Lab develops peptidomimetic biomaterials and studies their interactions with mammalian and bacterial cells. The outcomes of these research initiatives are applied to unmet needs in wound healing\, bacterial infections\, biofilm control\, tissue adhesives\, sustained delivery of proteins and small molecule therapeutics. Abraham obtained a PhD in physical organic photochemistry at Tulane University. He then carried out two post-doctoral stints\, the first one in bio-organic chemistry at Georgia Tech and the second one in biomaterials at Rutgers University.  \nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe 2023 Fall Seminar Series will feature Dr. Mukesh Kumar\, Associate Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama\, who will give a talk titled ‘Climate and irrigation effects on resilience of forests and crop cover‘ on Tuesday\, Aug. 22\, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building located at 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, AL.  \nDr. Kumar is hosted by Dr. Sanjiv Kumar\, Assistant Professor of Earth System Modeling and Observation in the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment. Dr. Kumar will discuss water deficit in soil and the atmosphere’s effects on forest and crop productivity and\, subsequently\, their resilience. This talk will discuss attempts towards an improved understanding and prediction of the resilience of forests and crop cover in response to hydroclimatic stress. \nDr. Mukesh Kumar is an Associate Professor of Hydrology at the University of Alabama. He studies ways to assess risks to plants and people from hydroclimatic extremes. He is co-developer of several open-source frameworks for (eco-)hydrologic predictions\, including PIHM\, FoRM\, BPT\, SPAC\, and DEWS\, many of which are being widely used in academia and government. With more than $4.5M in funded research\, 60+ papers\, and 30+ invited talks\, he holds prestigious awards\, including NSF CAREER\, UCOWR Ph.D. Dissertation honors\, and Alabama Water Institute Distinguished Faculty Fellow. Mukesh earned his B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. Alabama Meadows is a field-based research project that re-builds knowledge about Southeastern meadows and grasslands. Over the last several years\, grounded theory has guided the installation and maintenance of five meadow test plots at the Mary Olive Thomas Demonstration Forest in Auburn\, Alabama. This talk will discuss the evolution of the project over the last several years and the role that landscape architects might play in landscape management.  \nDavid Hill is an Associate Professor and Program Chair of the Graduate Program of Landscape Architecture at Auburn University\, as well as the Founding Principal of Hillworks\, a design practice grounded in the ecological and cultural complexities of the Southeast. Emily Knox is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Auburn University. She is interested in the role that designers might play in large\, complex landscapes. Most recently\, this has included work in the ranching landscapes of the American West and meadow and grassland landscapes of the American Southeast. \nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:Auburn University’s Weaver Lecture Series will present a talk by Julie Lockwood\, professor of ecology and interim director of the Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute at Rutgers University\, on Tuesday\, Feb. 27\, at 3:30 p.m.\, immediately followed by a reception at 4:30 p.m. at the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment. \nWeaver Lecture Series Seminar \nLockwood’s lecture titled “Is biodiversity conservation in the midst of a technology revolution? How new tech and old-fashioned natural history combine for renewed hope” will provide an overview of technological tools that are transforming how we monitor biodiversity\, focusing on environmental DNA as a tool combining natural history\, molecular technology\, robotics and bioinformatics. \nThe Weaver Lecture Series was established in 1996 through an endowment provided by Earl H. and Sandra H. Weaver. The series brings individuals with expertise in forestry\, wildlife\, and the environment to the Auburn University campus to enhance the college’s academic programs through public lectures and interaction with faculty and students. \nThe lecture is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday\, Feb. 27\, at 3:30 p.m. at the Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building at Auburn University. Refreshments will be available at 3 p.m.\, and a reception will be held after the lecture at 4:30 p.m. \nTitle: Is biodiversity conservation in the midst of a technology revolution? How new tech and old-fashioned natural history combine for renewed hope. \nAbstract: The species with whom we share this Earth provide us with cultural\, economic\, aesthetic\, and health benefits. The loss of these species through extinction thus results in harm more broadly. Every global indicator is flashing red with evidence that we are in a global biodiversity crisis. The on-the-ground actions needed to halt this loss are well-known because the drivers of species loss are well-known. The challenge is implementing solutions at a scale that matches the problem and monitoring successes and failures in real time so that we avoid spending time and money on unhelpful actions.  If you have ever engaged in field-based efforts to track how a single species is responding to management actions\, then you know that the methods we have relied on for decades in biodiversity conservation will not scale to meet these challenges. Lockwood will provide an overview of technological tools transforming how we monitor biodiversity and how these tools interface with good old-fashioned natural history knowledge\, focusing on using environmental DNA as a tool combining natural history\, molecular technology\, robotics\, and bioinformatics for biodiversity monitoring. \nSpeaker Biography: A native of Atlanta\, Georgia\, Professor Julie Lockwood is interim director of the Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute and professor of ecology at Rutgers University. Her research centers on the prevention and management of invasive species\, the socio-ecological dynamics of the wildlife trade\, and the impacts of climate change and clean energy production on biodiversity. She is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \n

SUMMARY:Geospatial and Environmental Informatics Open House
DESCRIPTION:The College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment will host an open house on Friday\, April 5\, for future students interested in the college’s newly restructured Geospatial and Environmental Informatics major. One of the few programs in the Southeast\, Auburn’s Geospatial and Environmental Informatics (GSEI) undergraduate degree program employs a unique\, interdisciplinary approach to teaching geospatial systems and technologies that provides students with expertise for careers such as environmental data scientist\, geospatial analyst\, or GIS manager. \nWith recent changes to the curriculum\, the degree is more transfer-friendly for students who require greater flexibility and desire a more diverse skill set for various careers. The college has also revamped the course technology\, including tools like geographic information systems (GIS)\, the global positioning system (GPS)\, satellite-based remote sensing\, computer learning simulation and drone imaging. Today\, GSEI courses are based on Python\, the dominant data science and machine learning program. Employing this beginner-friendly language makes geospatial tools and data more accessible to learn. \nStudents interested in learning more about the major are invited to attend the GSEI Open House on Friday\, April 5\, at 2:30 p.m. at the Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building at 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, Ala. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment’s Weaver Lecture Series proudly presents a lecture by Arun Agrawal\, Pulte Family Professor and founding director of the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative in the Keough School of Global Affairs at The University of Notre Dame. Agrawal\, who is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences\, will give a lecture titled “Transformative Change and Global Sustainability” on Tuesday\, Feb. 18\, 2025\, at 2 p.m.\, immediately followed by a reception at the Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment Building located at 602 Duncan Drive\, Auburn\, Ala. \nLecture Title: Transformative Change and Global Sustainability \nLecture Abstract: As the calamities of climate change\, biodiversity loss and sociopolitical polarization gather pace\, researchers and decision-makers are calling for transformative change. Global sustainability remains a chimera without transformative change\, especially in preventing biodiversity loss and nature’s decline. Drawing upon three years of work by more than 80 scientists from 30 countries\, Agrawal’s lecture will define and characterize transformative change and examine the role of visions\, scenarios and action theories in achieving it. It will also assess some of the most promising strategies and options that may lead to transformative change for achieving the vision of the 2050 Global Biodiversity Framework.\n\nSpeaker Biography: Arun Agrawal is the Pulte Family Professor and founding director of the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative in the Keough School of Global Affairs at The University of Notre Dame. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences. Agrawal’s research focuses broadly on the political economy of resource governance and development with a particular focus on commons and commoning. His recent research interests concern the relationship of climate change with health and conflict. Agrawal’s instructional interests concern social action and change. \nWeaver Lecture Series Seminar\nThe Weaver Lecture Series was established in 1996 through an endowment provided by Earl H. and Sandra H. Weaver. The series brings individuals with expertise in forestry\, wildlife and the environment to the Auburn University campus to enhance the college’s academic programs through public lectures and interaction with faculty and students. \nEvent Details\nRefreshments will be available at 1:30 p.m.\, the lecture will begin at 2 p.m.\, and a reception will follow at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend\, and no pre-registration is necessary. College Street in Auburn\, Ala. \nThis lecture series in forest economics and policy was established in the College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment by the College’s founding dean\, Emmett F. Thompson\, and his wife\, ViAnn. The annual series will enrich the college’s academic programs with speakers of national and international acclaim who possess expertise in forestry and natural resources with a focus on forest economics and policy. \nTitle: Forest Finance and Economics: Making Investment Decisions in Times of Uncertainty\n\nLecture Abstract:\nInvestment decisions in forestry and all other asset classes are not made in vacuums. The physical facts on the ground\, the priorities of key stakeholders and the external policy environment affect the economic context in which these decisions are made. Within a framework that accounts for financial objectives\, what do the economics of the south’s forest industry and timberland sectors indicate about the sector’s future competitiveness? What lessons can we draw that might apply more generally when making choices with emerging markets and assets associated with the natural environment?\n\nSpeaker Biography:\nBrooks Mendell possesses three decades of consulting\, operating and research experience in the forest products and timber industries. His experience includes roles in harvest operations and procurement with Weyerhaeuser\, in management consulting with Accenture and as a faculty member in forestry and finance at the University of Georgia (UGA). A Fulbright Scholar in Uruguay\, Mendell founded Forisk in 2004. He has broad domestic and international experience supporting small businesses\, Fortune 500 corporations and public organizations. An inductee in the Georgia Foresters Hall of Fame\, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, an MBA at the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in forest finance at UGA. \nEvent Details:\nAuburn University faculty\, staff\, students\, alumni and industry professionals are welcome to attend the lecture and reception taking place at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center Auditorium and Grand Ballroom.
