DESCRIPTION:Dr. Janaki R.R. Alavalapati became dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences in 2015. \nAuburn University will host a virtual Dean’s Forum and Alumni Social with Dr. Janaki Alavalapati on Thursday\, February 17\, as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nDr. Janaki Alavalapati was appointed dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences in 2015. Before that\, he spent eight years as professor and head of the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech and several years on the School of Forest Resources and Conservation faculty at the University of Florida. Since he was appointed dean\, Dr. Alavalapati has established several new undergraduate degrees and professional graduate programs and created the student leadership development program\, Forests\, Environment\, and Wildlife Leadership\, or FEWL\, Academy. Under his leadership\, the school has increased student enrollment by over 50%\, the diversity of the school’s faculty by 30%\, and increased the school’s research funding by over 80%. \nDr. Glenn Glover\, alumnus and emeritus professor\, will serve as moderator of the question-and-answer forum. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard W. Brinker served as dean from 1998 to 2011. He is shown in the newly constructed Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Building in 2005. \nAuburn University will host a virtual Dean’s Forum and Alumni Social with Dr. Richard W. Brinker on Thursday\, November 18\, as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nDr. Brinker began his Auburn career as an extension forester and assistant professor in 1988 and became an associate professor in 1995. He was promoted to dean\, professor\, and associate director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station for the School of Forestry in 1998 and served in this role until his retirement in 2011. Among Dr. Brinker’s many achievements\, he oversaw the merger of Auburn’s forestry and wildlife sciences programs which became the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences\, and the establishment of the interdisciplinary Center for Forest Sustainability in 1999. Thompson Deanship at the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences in March 2021. \n  \nAuburn University will host a virtual Dean’s Forum and Alumni Social with Dr. Emmett Thompson on Thursday\, October 28\, from 6 – 7 p.m. CT\, as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nDr. Thompson\, who retired in 1998\, began his career at Auburn in 1977 as head of the Department of Forestry\, which was then part of the School of Agriculture. In 1984\, he became the School of Forestry’s first dean. Among his many accomplishments\, Dr. Thompson established the School of Forestry as a stand-alone entity\, separate from the College of Agriculture. He also led the effort to create the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center and provided the foundational work for the construction of the state-of-the-art Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Building\, which was completed in 2005. Most recently\, Dr. Thompson’s legacy was honored with the establishment of the Emmett F. Thompson Deanship\, an endowed fund in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. \nDr. Glenn Glover\, alumnus and emeritus professor\, will serve as moderator of the question-and-answer forum. DESCRIPTION:Auburn University will host a virtual talk with Nick Wiley ’86\, chief operating officer of Ducks Unlimited\, on October 7 as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nWiley is the sixth speaker in the virtual “7 for 75 Speaker Series” as part of the school’s yearlong celebration\, which began March 1. As chief operating officer for Ducks Unlimited (DU) he serves as a strategic leader and member of DU’s executive leadership team. Wiley is a certified wildlife biologist with more than 35 years of experience in fish and wildlife management. Prior to joining DU in 2017\, he was executive director of  Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and former president of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. He is also the past chair of the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports. \nWiley received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgia Southern University in 1983 and a master’s degree in wildlife management from Auburn University in 1986. He serves on the Georgia Southern University College of Science and Mathematics Advisory Board and School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Advisory Council. Copies of the book “75 Years of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences” will be available for sale (cash or checks only) and author\, Arthur Slotkin\, will be present to sign copies. \n

DESCRIPTION:Auburn University will host a virtual talk with Dr. Dana Breed\, Global R&D Director for Packaging and Sustainability at The Coca-Cola Company\, on May 27 as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nBreed is the third speaker in the virtual “7 for 75 Speaker Series” as part of the school’s yearlong celebration\, which began March 1. She will give a talk titled\, “An Industry Career in Sustainable Materials: What do I do? How do you get a job doing something similar?” During her talk\, Dr. Breed will discuss the corporate role of research and development\, her career implementing various types of sustainability programs\, and the types of competencies and experiences she looks for when hiring early career professionals. \nThe talk is open to the public via Zoom from 2-3 p.m. CDT at https://auburn.zoom.us/j/83043315591\, and live-streamed via the school’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ausfws/live/. \nThe “7 for 75 Speaker Series” is designed to feature distinguished alumni and industry leaders representing an array of forestry\, wildlife and natural resource fields and enterprises. Speakers will cover a wide range of topics\, from land management to current and future technology to stakeholder engagement. \nThe next speaker in the series will be Mr. Rhett Johnson\, emeritus director of the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center\, co-founder and former president of the Longleaf Alliance\, and current board member of the Solon and Martha Dixon Foundation. Johnson will discuss his tenure at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center as well as his history and relationship with the Dixon family. His talk is scheduled for June 24 from 2-3 p.m. CT. \nSpeaker Bio: \nDana Breed is the Global R&D Director for Packaging and Sustainability at The Coca-Cola Company. She has invented or developed materials used in items you likely have in your home right now. Before joining The Coca-Cola Company\, she developed innovation strategy and led the development team for medical devices\, medical packaging and consumer goods at Eastman Chemical Company. Prior to that\, she researched new products across a variety of industries and developed materials and structures for flexible packaging at The Dow Chemical Company. \nDana has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of California Santa Barbara\, a M.E.Res. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Sydney\, and a B.S.Ch.E. in Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering and B.A. in Anthropology from Rice University. She is currently on the Packaging Advisory Board of California Polytechnic State University\, the External Advisory Board for the School of Materials Science & Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Advisory Council for the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences for Auburn University.
