SUMMARY:STEM in the Garden Teacher Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Alabama Extension Home Grounds Team knows that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful it must be grown and maintained correctly. The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles\, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar\, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum\, ‘STEM in the Garden\,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.\nSessions include:\nJune 14: Soil and Plant nutrition; Organic vs. Conventional Growing Methods\nJune 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom\nJune 21- Pollinator Gardening- Who they are and what plants attract them; Insects in the Garden: How to attract beneficials and eliminate pests\nJune 23- Basics of Growing Vegetables and Herbs; Edible Landscaping Ideas for Outdoor Classrooms\nJune 28- Rain Gardens and Rainwater Harvesting; Composting and Vermicomposting in Schools\nJune 30- 25 Landscape Tips for the Outdoor Classroom; Ornamental Ponds: Plants and Maintenance\nCEUs are available with each session through the AAMU/UAH Regional Inservice Center. DESCRIPTION:Alabama Watershed Stewards (AWS) is a statewide science-based educational program that promotes healthy watersheds\, increases understanding of water pollution\, and provides the knowledge and tools needed to prevent and resolve local water quality problems. The goal of the AWS program is to increase citizen awareness and knowledge about the function of watersheds\, their potential impairments\, and local watershed protection strategies.
